The Thing About Grace

I once heard someone say, “Preaching should never be negative.” I guess they weren’t a fan of the preaching of guys like Jesus, John the Baptist, and all of the OT prophets. I think they were in favor of emphasizing the grace and mercy of God without emphasizing some of the difficult truths that reveal just how graceful God is. Here’s the thing about grace: you can’t come to a full understanding of how incredible God’s grace is until you come to a full understanding of how terrible your sin is. By emphasizing one without the other, we end up with what Dietrich Bonhoffer called,”cheap grace.”
